Sioux Falls, SD Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 160.553 of the Sioux Falls Zoning Code (adopted as part of the Shape Sioux Falls 2040 update) controls where licensed and operable vehicles may be parked on residential property. The ordinance allows an unlimited number of licensed and operable passenger automobiles owned by the resident to be parked on an existing concrete driveway or its equivalent (asphalt, pavers, or similar approved surface), provided the required on-site parking is provided. One recreational motor vehicle may be parked temporarily for less than 48 hours for customary cleaning and loading on the same driveway. Long-term RV storage is regulated by setback and screening requirements within the same section. Parking on lawn or unimproved surfaces in the required front yard is prohibited. Driveway approaches (the apron between the back of the curb and the property line) require a city right-of-way / driveway-approach permit issued by the Engineering Division; surface, slope, and sight-distance standards apply. Commercial vehicles in residential zones are restricted by § 77.009 (no parking of trucks over a stated GVWR, trailers, or commercial equipment on residential streets or in residential zones without a permit).
