There is no countywide overnight parking ban in unincorporated Shasta County. However, a vehicle left on a county road or public right-of-way for 72 or more consecutive hours may be tagged and towed as abandoned under California Vehicle Code sections 22651(k) and 22669. Vehicles missing essential parts may be removed immediately.
California Vehicle Code section 22651(k) authorizes a peace officer or designated employee to remove a vehicle that has been parked or left standing upon a highway for 72 or more consecutive hours in violation of a local ordinance authorizing removal. Section 22669 separately authorizes removal of vehicles believed to be abandoned, and immediate removal of vehicles lacking essential equipment. Shasta County Code Chapter 10.04 (Abandoned Vehicles) implements the local-ordinance hook required by 22651(k) for unincorporated county roads. Shasta County does not impose a blanket 2-6 a.m. parking ban under Vehicle Code section 22507.5 on a countywide basis. Camping in a vehicle on a county road or in a public right-of-way is generally not allowed and may also trigger trespass or nuisance enforcement.
After the 72-hour threshold is reached, the vehicle may be tagged by Sheriff's deputies or CHP officers and removed at the registered owner's expense. Towing and storage fees are governed by Vehicle Code sections 22850 through 22851. Abandoning a vehicle on a highway is itself a separate offense under Vehicle Code section 22523 carrying a minimum $100 fine.
