Charles County, MD Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Section 297-29B(10) of the Charles County zoning ordinance permits specialized vehicles, defined to include recreational vehicles, campers, manufactured home coaches, boats, and boat trailers, to be parked or stored in all residential zones, but only under two conditions. First, under § 297-29B(10)(a), the vehicle cannot be used as living quarters or occupied for more than seven days in any ninety-day period, preventing residents from using an RV as a de facto second dwelling. Second, under § 297-29B(10)(b), the parking or storage area must be within the buildable area of the lot, and in the RR, RL, RM, or RH residential zones the vehicle cannot be parked in front of the principal structure, pushing storage to side or rear yards on most residential lots.

Separately, § 297-29B(11) caps any motor vehicle over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight from being parked in a residential zone at all, and lighter commercial vehicles used to carry freight or passengers for a fee are limited to one per residential lot, with school buses capped the same way. Trucks or trailers over five tons empty weight face their own restriction under § 297-29B(12), barred from residential zones except for on-site farm use or active household moving and deliveries.
