South Jordan prohibits storing inoperable, unregistered, or wrecked vehicles on residential property in public view. Junk vehicles must be enclosed in a garage, screened, or removed within the notice period set by code enforcement, typically 10-15 days.
South Jordan Municipal Code defines a junk or abandoned vehicle as one that is inoperable, lacks current registration, is partially dismantled, or has been stationary for an extended period on private property where visible from public right-of-way or adjacent property. Such vehicles constitute a public nuisance under Title 8 nuisance provisions. Owners may legally store one inoperable or classic vehicle if it is fully enclosed in a garage, covered by a fitted vehicle cover AND screened by a 6-foot opaque fence or hedge, or otherwise out of public view. Visible junk vehicles are subject to notice-and-abate procedures: code enforcement issues a written notice giving the owner 10-15 days to move, repair, register, or remove the vehicle. Failure to comply can result in administrative citations, daily penalties, and city-ordered towing at owner's expense. Vehicles in commercial or industrial zones have different standards. Utah state law (41-6a-1408) also authorizes removal of vehicles abandoned on public right-of-way. Active restoration projects may qualify for a temporary exemption if the owner provides documentation of ongoing work, but neighbors' complaints and enforcement discretion apply. HOAs in Daybreak and other South Jordan subdivisions routinely impose stricter rules including no on-street overnight parking.
