Jefferson Parish's Weed Control Section cites vacant and abandoned properties for grass over eight inches, trash and debris, and junked or abandoned vehicles. If the owner doesn't clear it, the parish cuts and cleans the lot and bills the owner.
The Weed Control Section of Code Compliance enforces the parish's vegetation and nuisance rules on vacant and abandoned lots. Grass exceeding eight (8) inches, obnoxious weeds, accumulated trash, debris, and junked or abandoned vehicles are all violations. After notice, if the owner fails to act, the parish may enter to cut grass, obnoxious weeds or other deleterious or unhealthful growths and remove trash, debris, refuse or discarded or obnoxious matter, then bill the owner and lien the property for the cost. Jefferson Parish has billed thousands of owners in a single year for high grass and debris cleanups. This covers the unincorporated parish under Chapter 37 (Vegetation) and Chapter 19 (Nuisances).
Parish abatement (cutting/cleaning) at owner's expense; charges assessed and liened to the property.
