Miami requires vacant lot owners to maintain their properties free of overgrown vegetation, debris, and hazards. The city actively enforces vacant lot maintenance through Code Compliance and may abate violations at the owner's expense.
Vacant lots must be maintained with grass and weeds below 12 inches. Properties must be free of accumulated debris, abandoned vehicles, and construction materials. Standing water that creates mosquito breeding habitat must be eliminated (particularly important given South Florida's mosquito-borne disease concerns). The city may mow or clean vacant lots and bill the property owner plus administrative fees. Liens are placed on properties for unpaid abatement costs. Properties in designated redevelopment areas may have additional requirements.
Failure to maintain vacant lots results in city abatement at owner's expense plus administrative fees. Liens may be placed for unpaid costs. Special Magistrate fines of $100-$250 per day apply for ongoing violations.
