Full Breakdown
Under City-Parish Code Sec. 62-76, no one may carry an open, unsealed glass container of beer, wine or liquor on any public street, sidewalk, park or parking lot owned or controlled within the corporate limits of the City of Lafayette, or in private places open to the public. Licensed beverage dealers and their employees are exempt. A stricter rule applies in the Downtown District, Simcoe-Surrey Street Corridor and McKinley Street Area: Sec. 6-14 bars public possession of any open alcoholic container there overnight (midnight to 6 a.m.), though paper, plastic or Styrofoam cups are allowed other hours. Neither ordinance reaches the unincorporated parish or Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville or Milton.
Violations & Fines
Violating either ban is a misdemeanor punishable under Sec. 1-9's general penalty: a fine up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both; each day of a continuing violation counts separately.
