Full Breakdown

King County bans possessing an open container of alcohol and consuming or selling alcohol anywhere in a county park area or associated marine area, unless the parks director has specifically designated and posted the spot for alcohol use, under K.C.C. 7.12.285. Being intoxicated while in a park is separately prohibited. The rule applies only to parks run by unincorporated King County; Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, Renton, and other incorporated cities operate their own parks under their own municipal codes, so this section does not reach city parks or downtown streets.

Violations & Fines

Violating K.C.C. 7.12.285 is a civil infraction under 7.12.650: a monetary penalty up to $500, suspension of park privileges, or both; being intoxicated in a park area is prohibited too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink alcohol in a King County park?
Only where the parks director has specifically designated and posted an area for alcohol use; otherwise open containers, possession, and consumption are banned in unincorporated county park areas under K.C.C. 7.12.285.
Does this rule cover Seattle parks?
No. Seattle, Bellevue, and other cities run their own park systems under their own municipal codes; K.C.C. 7.12.285 governs only unincorporated King County's parks and marine facilities.
What happens if I get cited?
It's a civil infraction under K.C.C. 7.12.650, punishable by a fine up to $500 and/or suspension of park privileges, not a criminal charge.
