Auburn, AL Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

City Code section 22-11 defines "skates" to include roller skates, roller blades and skateboards, and it flatly prohibits riding a bicycle or skating on sidewalks anywhere inside the downtown business district. That district is drawn tightly: bounded on the north by Glenn Avenue, on the west by Wright Street and College Street, on the south by Magnolia Avenue and Thach Avenue, and on the east by Gay Street. The same section also bars parking a bicycle downtown except in racks the city installs, with the city engineer deciding where those racks go.

Anyone who rides a bicycle or skates on a downtown sidewalk is guilty of an offense against the city, punishable under the general penalty schedule in section 1-9. A bicycle left downtown outside a designated rack is impounded under the direction of the chief of police and stored at police headquarters; it is not released to the owner until the police department is shown proof of ownership and a receipt showing the municipal judge's fine has been paid in full.
