Austin, TX Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Sec. 12-1-32, titled "Use of Micro-Mobility Devices, Skateboards, Bicycle Motocross Bicycles, and Toy Vehicles on Public Right-of-Way or Property," bans two specific things. Subsection (A) bars using a toy vehicle on a public street except to cross at a crosswalk. Subsection (B) bars operating a micro-mobility device, or riding a skateboard, toy vehicle, or similar device, "on public landscaping, amenities or art," or in a manner contrary to the intended use of any amenity. "Amenity" is defined in Sec. 12-1-1(2) to mean public furniture, a utility, stairs, or an architectural feature, so the rule targets skating on planters, benches, stair rails, sculptures, and similar street furniture rather than skateboarding on an ordinary sidewalk or street generally.

A second, separate restriction applies specifically at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport: Sec. 13-1-117(B) flatly bans using "roller skates or a skateboard, or ride in or by means of a coaster, toy vehicle, or similar device on an airport street, sidewalk, walkway, terminal, or other airport building," with no amenity-damage requirement at all. Skateboards ridden as ordinary transportation on Austin sidewalks and streets elsewhere in the city fall instead under Chapter 12-2's general micro-mobility rules, since "micro-mobility device" is defined in Sec. 12-1-1(4) to include a skateboard: riders must yield to pedestrians on sidewalks, obey traffic-control devices, and stay off streets or sidewalks where riding is posted as prohibited.
