Jefferson Parish, LA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 20-47 makes it unlawful to skateboard, ride upon, or propel a skateboard anywhere within Veterans Memorial Square, defined as the stretch of neutral ground on the parish's east bank bounded by Causeway Boulevard to the east, the Purple Heart Loop, formerly the Athania turnaround, to the west, and the eastbound and westbound lanes of Veterans Boulevard to the south and north. The ordinance defines a skateboard broadly, as any human-and-gravity-propelled vehicle made of a thin, firm sheet material with wheels on the underside, so the ban covers standard boards and similar riding devices alike.

A violation carries two penalties at once: the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office impounds the skateboard for up to 30 days, and the rider is fined $100. Getting the board back requires the owner, or a parent or guardian if the rider is a minor, to retrieve it in person from the Sheriff's Office Property and Evidence unit at 1801 West Bank Expressway in Harvey, unless the department directs otherwise. A skateboard left unclaimed for 120 days after impoundment can be discarded or destroyed outright, so riders who let the impoundment period lapse permanently lose the board along with paying the fine.

The ban's reach stops at the square's own boundaries: Section 20-47 defines both the prohibited conduct and the location together in the same section, so it does not automatically extend to other neutral grounds or parks elsewhere in the parish.
