Suffolk County skateboarders are governed mainly by town ordinances regulating sidewalk and street use; New York Vehicle and Traffic Law treats e-skateboards and similar devices under separate state rules with limits on roadway operation.
Skateboarding regulations are set primarily at the town level across Suffolk County. Most towns prohibit skateboarding in commercial business district sidewalks, near government buildings, or in marked no-skate zones, while permitting recreational use in residential streets. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1265-a covers electric scooters and e-skateboards, generally allowing operation on streets with speed limits up to 30 mph but not on sidewalks. Helmets are required for riders under 18. Suffolk County and town parks operate dedicated skate facilities subject to posted rules.
Skating in posted no-skate zones, on prohibited business district sidewalks, or in violation of helmet requirements typically results in warnings and small civil fines from local police.
