West Haven, CT Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 170-29 of the West Haven Code, in Chapter 170 Parks and Recreation Areas, closes park bicycle paths to two groups of users. No motorized vehicles are permitted upon any bicycle path under the jurisdiction of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and neither is the use of roller skates, skateboards and similar items or devices. The ban is tied to those paths and not to skateboarding as an activity. The West Haven Code text reviewed for this page names skateboards in that one section, and it holds no skateboard rule for sidewalks or business districts.

Other park rules govern wheels in the City of West Haven. Section 170-27 bars driving a bike, motorcycle or motorized vehicle on any playing fields or grass areas under the Department's control, and bars riding a bicycle, motorcycle or other motor vehicle without reasonable regard to the safety of others. A bicycle has to be left in a rack where one is provided, and cannot be left lying on the ground or paved area or set against a tree or other structure or in any place where other persons can trip over it. Section 170-22 limits motorized vehicles in the parks to paved park roads at a rate of speed no greater than 10 miles per hour. On beaches, § 170-17 bars any motorized vehicle, including all-terrain vehicles and mopeds, from standing, parking or being driven or pushed across a beach at any time, except authorized parks and police patrol vehicles.

The Board of Parks and Recreation can add rules. Under § 170-31 the regulations it promulgates are incorporated by reference, and a violation of them is also a violation of the chapter.
