Texas treats used syringes as regulated medical waste. Corpus Christi has no city-run needle exchange. Residents and clinics must use approved sharps containers and authorized medical-waste haulers; household sharps are not allowed loose in trash.
Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 481 and DSHS medical-waste rules govern handling and disposal of used hypodermic needles. Texas authorized syringe-services pilots only in narrow circumstances, and Corpus Christi does not operate a needle-exchange program. Residents who self-administer medication should place sharps in a rigid, puncture-resistant container and dispose through a pharmacy take-back program, household hazardous-waste collection, or a registered medical-waste hauler. Clinics, dialysis centers, and tattoo studios must maintain documented disposal contracts. Loose needles in regular trash or recycling can trigger citation and worker-injury liability.
Improper disposal of regulated medical waste can lead to state DSHS penalties, civil liability for sanitation-worker injuries, and city code-enforcement action against generators or facilities.
