Under Fairfax County Code Chapter 109.1 (Solid Waste) and Virginia regulated medical waste rules, household sharps must be placed in puncture-resistant, leak-proof containers labeled biohazard before disposal. Loose needles in curbside trash, recycling, or yard waste are prohibited because they injure sanitation workers. Fairfax County accepts properly contained household sharps at the I-66 and I-95 transfer stations during designated household hazardous waste hours. Some retail pharmacies and the Fairfax County Health Department also offer take-back. Commercial generators including tattoo studios and clinics must contract with a regulated medical waste hauler under Virginia DEQ rules.
Improper disposal of sharps in curbside containers can trigger solid waste violation notices, civil penalties, and refusal of collection by the hauler.
