Chicago's Shared Housing Ordinance (Chapter 4-14) requires hosts to ensure guests comply with the city's noise ordinance (Chapter 8-32). Repeated noise complaints can result in registration revocation. Noise fines start at $300 for a first offense.
Under Chapter 4-14 of the Chicago Municipal Code, shared housing hosts must ensure their rental units do not disrupt the peace and quiet of neighbors. Hosts are legally responsible for guest behavior under Section 4-14-040 (host duties). The city's noise ordinance (Chapter 8-32) applies fully to short-term rental guests. Section 8-32-070 restricts amplified sound on private open space between 10 PM and 8 AM to levels no louder than average conversational level at 100 feet from the property line. Noise disturbances audible at 600 feet or more from the source are violations under Section 8-32-030. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection may revoke a shared housing registration for repeated violations.
Noise violations carry fines of $300 for a first offense, $500 for a second offense within one year, and $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense within one year. Hosts may also face registration suspension or revocation for repeated noise complaints from guests.
