Greensboro requires STR registration via zoning permit. Operators must display the permit number on the property and in all advertisements.
Under the Greensboro short-term rental ordinance (LDO Section 30-7-1.2), every short-term rental must be registered with the city through the zoning permit process. The $200 permit application can be submitted through the city's online STR Zoning Permit Portal or in person at City Hall. Key registration requirements include: the permit number must appear conspicuously on the property and in all advertisements for the rental; operators must provide up-to-date contact information to city authorities; and Whole House Rental operators or property owners must reside in Guilford County or a directly adjacent county and must place their contact information prominently in the rental unit. The operator must be readily accessible throughout each rental period. If ownership or the designated operator changes, a new permit must be obtained within 30 days of the change, along with a new $200 fee. As of February 2025, Greensboro City Council removed the previous 750-foot spacing requirement between STR properties, making it easier for operators to register in proximity to other rentals. Safety requirements include smoke detectors in each bedroom and common area, carbon monoxide detectors where fuel-burning appliances are present, and fire extinguishers on each floor and in the kitchen.
Failure to register, display the permit number, or maintain current contact information may result in civil penalties of up to $500 per violation. Two or more verified ordinance violations within 365 days may result in permit revocation.
