Bexar County imposes a combined 1.75 percent county venue and hotel occupancy tax (1.75 percent total, allocated between the short-term rental venue project and general fund) under Tax Code Chapter 352 and the enabling venue election that funds the AT&T Center and other facilities. The City of San Antonio adds a 9 percent city Hotel Occupancy Tax under Chapter 31 of its code, one of the higher rates in Texas. Total effective rate for San Antonio STRs: 16.75 percent. Outside San Antonio inside other Bexar cities, rates vary but are lower. Platforms including Airbnb and Vrbo collect and remit both state and Bexar County HOT automatically; they collect and remit San Antonio city HOT as of 2019. Operators must still register with the Texas Comptroller and the city, file returns even when platforms remit, and pay any Texas sales tax on separately charged cleaning or resort fees. Permit fees in San Antonio are 100 dollars initial and 100 dollars annual renewal.
