Lake County charges a 4% Tourist Development Tax on rentals of six months or less, remitted to the Lake County Tax Collector. This is on top of Florida state sales tax. Returns are due by the 20th of the following month.
Under FS 125.0104 (the Local Option Tourist Development Tax Act) Lake County levies a Tourist Development Tax on the total consideration charged for living quarters rented for a term of six months or less — hotels, condos, homes, RV parks, and vacation rentals. The Lake County rate is 4%. Operators register on the Tax Collector's TouristExpress system, collect the tax from guests, and file monthly returns due by the 20th of the following month. This county TDT is separate from and in addition to Florida's 6% state sales tax and any discretionary sales surtax collected by the Department of Revenue.
Delinquent tourist-tax returns accrue penalties and interest and can be pursued by the Tax Collector; collecting the tax and failing to remit it is treated as theft of state/county funds.
