Full Breakdown
The County taxes rent paid for any short-term rental, including Airbnb-style short-term residential rentals, at 8% of rent, collected by the owner/host or remitted by the booking platform monthly to the Controller by the 25th of each month. Separately, anyone hosting a short-term residential rental in an unincorporated part of the county (Glen Burnie, Severna Park, Pasadena and similar communities included) must first register with the Department of Inspections and Permits and pay a $100 fee for a two-year registration, renewable for another $100. A host may register no more than two dwelling units, and rentals under 24 hours are not permitted.
Violations & Fines
Failing to collect, remit, or file a return on the 8% occupancy tax draws the tax due plus 0.5% monthly interest and a 10% penalty. Renting without an approved registration, or letting a registration lapse, can lead to denial, suspension, or revocation after a 10-day notice, on top of any unpaid tax, fines, or fees owed to the County.
