Catoosa County, GA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 5.05.10 of the Unified Development Code sets standards for interstate billboards beyond the general limits in Table 5-1. The outside measurements are fixed at 14 feet in height and 48 feet in length, with or without trim, and the sign structure itself must stand at least 10 feet above the adjacent interstate pavement, measured from the lower edge of the sign face, while the overall structure cannot exceed 100 feet in height above the pavement of the nearest travel lane or 100 feet from the ground at its base, whichever is greater.

Interstate billboards have to be spaced not less than 500 feet apart, measured from the two closest points on the same side of the road, and only one sign is allowed to face a given direction per location, though single-face, back-to-back, or V-formation configurations are permitted. The county further caps density at interstate interchanges: not more than three interstate billboard signs can be placed per quadrant of any interstate interchange, with Catoosa County's own three interchanges named as exit numbers 345, 350, and 353, and those signs can only go up on commercially or industrially zoned property within a defined 1,600-foot band beginning 500 feet from where the pavement widens for the interchange ramp.

Billboards also cannot sit within 500 feet of an officially designated historical site or monument, and any billboard not regulated or permitted by the Georgia Department of Transportation is barred outright, since GDOT holds its own jurisdiction over signs along the interstate right-of-way.
