Jefferson Parish, LA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 40-684(a)(2)(b) keeps billboards away from the interstate system outright: no off-premises sign may sit within 500 feet of an interstate highway, measured radially from the farthest projection of the sign to the nearest interstate right-of-way. On-premises signage gets the opposite treatment near Interstate 10 specifically. Section 40-683(c) lets an on-premises sign within 100 feet of I-10 add 15 feet of height above what the zoning district would otherwise allow, up to a ceiling of 60 feet, whenever a sound wall has been erected along that stretch.

Section 40-683(d) pairs that with a 20 percent bump in permitted sign area for a detached nonresidential sign in the same 100-foot band. The code carries a third freeway-specific exception for roof signs: section 40-683(e)(3) caps roof signs at six feet above the highest point of the building everywhere in the parish except along the West Bank Expressway, where that six-foot ceiling doesn't apply. Together the three provisions treat the parish's controlled-access corridors as a special sign environment: off-premises advertising structures are pushed back from the interstate right-of-way, but a property owner fronting I-10 behind a sound wall, or a building along the West Bank Expressway, gets more height and area than the base zoning district allows.

Any sign claiming the I-10 sound-wall bonus still has to go through the standard sign permit process administered by the department of building permits under section 40-685, including dimensioned drawings sealed by a licensed architect or engineer.
