Full Breakdown
Under the county's sign ordinance, outdoor advertising structures and signs require a use permit countywide. Along a freeway, expressway or limited access highway that isn't a designated scenic corridor, each structure must be at least 1,000 feet from the next one, measured parallel to the highway centerline. On designated scenic corridors, including the Highway 101 Scenic Corridor, that spacing doubles to 2,000 feet, height is capped at 10 feet (6 feet on other scenic corridors), and the message is limited to on-site business identification. No structure may stand within 2,000 feet of a historical or national monument. This applies only to unincorporated county land. Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor and the other incorporated cities inside the county enforce their own separate sign codes.
Violations & Fines
Unpermitted outdoor advertising structures are enforced under the county's general code (§ 1-7 et seq.): an enforcing officer can issue a notice of violation or administrative citation, impose civil penalties, and pursue abatement; a use permit found in violation of its conditions is subject to revocation.
