Gordon County, GA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Yard and garage sale signs fall under the Unified Land Development Code § 5.04.04, the list of signs that need no sign permit. The Code defines a yard sale sign as any sign pertaining to the sale of personal belongings on any rural or residential zoned property, and the term includes garage sale signs.

Subsection K allows one sign of a maximum area of eight square feet on the property where the yard or garage sale is being conducted. It must be removed within 24 hours of the close of the sale. The lead-in to § 5.04.04 adds that all other applicable regulations still apply and that no such sign in a residential zoning district can be directly illuminated.

Subsection J covers temporary curb-type signs, which are allowed in all zoning districts from 3:00 p.m. on Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday only. The sign owner is responsible for removing them before 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Each is limited to four square feet in area and three feet in height, cannot be placed on trees, utility poles, fences, or other existing objects or structures, and cannot be placed in public rights-of-way. One such sign conveying the same message is allowed every 300 feet along a roadway, and it must stand on private property with the property owner's consent.

The general prohibitions in § 5.04.02 back this up: signs on trees, utility poles, or natural features are prohibited, and no signs other than those of local or state governments, public service agencies, and railroads can stand in a public right-of-way. The older Code of Ordinances carries parallel text in § 13-6(b)(22) and (23), where weekend directional signs for yard sales, moving sales, and estate sales share the Friday 3:00 p.m. to Sunday 11:59 p.m. window, and garage sale signs must be out of the right-of-way and on private property with the owner's consent.
