Lewis County, WA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

207(2) requires a permit for any sign erected, relocated, or altered, but subsection (4) lists exemptions where no permit is needed. Estate and garage sale signs fall under the temporary-signs exemption at (4)(m)(iv), alongside real estate signs, political signs, construction signs, sandwich boards, and special-occasion signs, each bound by its own size or time limit. A garage or estate sale sign qualifies only if it is 8 square feet or smaller and stays in place no more than 10 days; a bigger sign or one left up longer loses the exemption and needs a standard sign permit like any commercial sign.

The exemption does not excuse a garage sale sign from the section's outright prohibitions: it still cannot be placed on Lewis County property or within a public right-of-way or easement without the controlling agency's consent under (3)(a), and previously placed signs without that consent are unlawful and subject to removal. It also cannot create a traffic hazard by size, placement, or method of illumination under (3)(b). The Community Development Department administers sign permitting and reviews exempt-sign compliance as part of general Title 17 code enforcement.
