Jefferson Parish, LA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 32-1(a) of the Jefferson Parish Code bars posting a sign, marker, placard, poster or handbill on any curb, gutter, tree, lamppost, telephone or utility pole, mailbox, hydrant, public building, or in any right-of-way, servitude, street, median, neutral ground or sidewalk. That sweeping list covers the yard sign staked at a corner or zip-tied to a utility pole to point buyers toward a garage sale. The only carve-out in the section belongs to registered real estate agents, who may place temporary, non-illuminated signs in the right-of-way between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; garage sale signs get no equivalent window at any hour.

Under Sec. 32-1(b)(1) and (b)(3), any sign posted on public property in violation of the section is "considered abandoned" and subject to "immediate removal and disposal" by the department of code compliance and enforcement, the department of parkways, or the department of public works, "without further notice." The parish builds this warning directly into the garage sale process: it requires notice to "all garage sale permittees" on the zoning-clearance and occupational-license applications used to run a sale, so a permit holder cannot claim surprise when a roadside sign disappears.

The sign ban sits alongside, and is reinforced by, the separate garage-sale ordinance in Chapter 30. That chapter already requires a permit from the department of citizens' affairs, sets a $10.00 fee, caps a sale at two consecutive days between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and limits any address to two sales per twelve-month period, so the sign restriction is one more condition layered onto an already-permitted, already-time-limited event. A sign that violates Sec. 32-1 is also declared a nuisance under Sec. 32-8, exposing the person who posted it to further prosecution.
