Utica treats garage-sale signs as temporary signs. They may go up no more than six weeks before the sale and must come down within four days after, cannot exceed eight square feet in residential areas, and may not be nailed to trees or utility poles.
Garage- and yard-sale signs fall under the temporary-sign provision (Sec. 2-29-349). A temporary sign is permitted for a period not exceeding six weeks before the event and not exceeding four days after it, so a garage-sale sign should be removed promptly once the sale ends. In residential districts the sign may not exceed eight square feet. Signs may not be attached to fences, trees, utility poles, rocks, or other natural landscape features, nor placed to obstruct or impair traffic or create a hazard. The city does not permit temporary signs in the public right-of-way.
Signs left up trigger a seven-day written notice; if not removed, the Building Inspector removes them and any cash deposit is forfeited to cover removal.
