Wayne County, NC Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Wayne County Zoning Ordinance § 91(r) lists yard sale signs among the sign types allowed in any district without a permit, so a homeowner does not need to apply to the Planning Department before posting one. The trade-off is a tight set of limits: no more than three signs per sale, each one nonilluminated, a maximum size of four square feet, and a display window capped at three days within any 30-day period. The signs must come down when the sale is over, and because they fall under § 91 rather than § 92's permit track, they are exempt from the application, fee and plan-review steps that apply to permitted signs under §§ 92 and 93.

Like every sign under Article IX, yard sale signs still have to sit outside the public right-of-way and any sight triangle at a traffic intersection per § 90, and they remain subject to the county's general sign-location rule in § 97, which bars advertising signs within ten feet of a street right-of-way except where public safety requires otherwise. The county's Sign Compliance provision, § 90, applies these rules to every property owner, lessee, or other person responsible for posting a sign within Wayne County's jurisdiction.
