Chesterfield County, VA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Virginia Code Sec. 15.2-109 bars localities from prohibiting political campaign signs on private property when they comply with zoning and right-of-way rules for temporary nonpolitical signs and are posted with the owner's permission. Chesterfield treats campaign signs as noncommercial limited-duration signs. In R, R-TH, R-MF and MH districts, each noncommercial sign on a zoning lot may not exceed 6 square feet and 5 feet in height, with the aggregate of all such signs capped at 24 square feet, displayed up to 120 consecutive days. Signs must stay off the public right-of-way (generally 5 feet from property lines and more than one foot from the right-of-way).
