Jefferson Parish, LA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 40-686 lists nine categories of signs that can go up without a permit when in accordance with the structural and safety requirements of the Building Code, and item (7) puts temporary political signs on that list at a maximum of 32 square feet. That's a narrower exemption than it sounds: the sign is excused only from the permit and inspection process that section 40-685 otherwise requires of every sign in the parish, which normally means filing dimensioned drawings sealed by a licensed architect or engineer with the department of building permits before erecting anything.

A political sign still has to be built to withstand the wind and structural loads the Building Code requires, and it still can't exceed the 32-square-foot ceiling regardless of how many races or candidates it names. The same exemption section clears other everyday temporary signage on the same terms: an 8-square-foot real estate sign per street frontage, a 64-square-foot construction sign outside the R-1, R-2 and RR-3 districts, government safety signs, address signs, and small directional signs. Because political signs share that exemption list rather than getting their own article, the parish has not written separate removal-by-date, setback, or per-candidate rules into the code beyond the 32-square-foot cap; any additional restriction, on public right-of-way placement for example, comes from other chapters of the Code, not from section 40-686 itself.

A political sign that ignores the 32-square-foot limit loses the exemption and becomes an unpermitted sign under Chapter 40, the same as any other unauthorized sign in the parish.
