Political signs in unincorporated LA County are protected by the First Amendment and California Elections Code Section 18310. Counties cannot ban political signs on private property. Size limits may apply under Title 22 sign code (typically 32 sq ft maximum in residential zones). Signs cannot be placed on public property or in public rights-of-way. No permit is required for political signs on private property. Signs must be removed within 10 days after the election under state law. HOAs cannot prohibit political signs within the 90-day pre-election period under Civil Code 4710.
Political signs on public property may be removed by the county and the responsible party cited $50-$100 per sign. Signs not removed within 10 days after the election may be cited as sign code violations. Destroying or removing political signs from private property is a misdemeanor under Elections Code 18310 with fines up to $1,000.
