South Gate, CA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

South Gate's sign regulations live in the Title 11 Zoning code (the same title that contains Chapter 11.20 Code Establishment, Chapter 11.25 Residential Neighborhood Zones, and Chapter 11.34 Noise Control Program). Per the U.S. Supreme Court's content-neutrality requirement (Reed v. Town of Gilbert, 576 U.S. 155 (2015)) and California's Constitution Art. I §2, the City cannot single out 'political' signs for stricter treatment than other temporary non-commercial signs of equivalent size and placement. A residential campaign yard sign on private property with the owner's permission therefore needs no City permit and is allowed in any zone where temporary signs are allowed. Where a sign would be visible from a state highway — including I-710 (Long Beach Freeway) and SR-42 (Firestone Boulevard / Manchester Avenue corridors as they pass through South Gate) — California Business & Professions Code §5405.3 governs as a statewide minimum: each temporary political sign must (1) encourage a vote in a scheduled election, (2) be placed no sooner than 90 days before the election and removed within 10 days after, (3) be no larger than 32 square feet, (4) not be placed within the right-of-way of any highway or within 660 feet of a classified landscaped freeway where visible from the freeway's main traveled way, and (5) have a Statement of Responsibility filed with Caltrans naming the person responsible for removal.
