Longmont allows political election signs on private property only, with permission of the owner. They cannot be placed in the public right-of-way, attached to utility poles, street signs, traffic signals, hydrants, trees or fences, and must not obstruct driver sightlines. Sign rules are codified in LMC Chapter 15.06, and HOAs are further preempted by Colorado's CCIOA political-sign statute (C.R.S. 38-33.3-106.5).
The City of Longmont's Code Enforcement sign-ordinance overview defines an 'election sign' as any sign identifying candidates or issues on the ballot in an upcoming election. Under Longmont Municipal Code Chapter 15.06 (Signs), political election signs must be placed on private property only β they may not be placed in the public right-of-way or on other public property. Only the property owner, or a candidate/political committee who has direct permission from the owner, may erect a political sign. For rental property the responsible person may be the owner or the tenant depending on the desired location and lease terms. Election signs must not obstruct the view of vehicle operators or create a traffic hazard, and cannot be posted on or attached to street lamp posts, street signs, traffic signs or signals, hydrants, trees, shrubs, fences or utility poles. Statewide, C.R.S. 38-33.3-106.5 (CCIOA) bars HOAs from prohibiting political signs on a unit owner's property; HOAs may only prohibit display earlier than 45 days before an election and later than 7 days after, and the maximum size HOAs may impose is the lesser of any applicable local ordinance or 36" x 48". Signs erected in violation of LMC 15.06 are subject to removal by the City and to Longmont's civil penalty schedule: $100 first violation, $200 second, and $500 for third or subsequent violations.
Improperly placed signs may be removed by Code Enforcement. Civil penalties: $100 first violation, $200 second, $500 third or subsequent (Longmont Code Enforcement civil-penalty schedule). Report at 303-651-8695.
