Summary

Jefferson County's Zoning Resolution caps political signs at two per parcel and four square feet apiece, and requires them to be non-illuminated and temporary. Section 1403.01(g) allows them in any zoning district where county zoning applies, alongside real-estate and builder signs, for up to six months before they must meet permanent-sign standards. Inside the U.S. Highway 280 Corridor, Section 1502.09(c)(11) separately exempts political campaign signs on private property from that corridor's sign-permit process.

City-specific rules exist: Hoover, Vestavia Hills, and Birmingham have their own political signs rules that differ from Jefferson County's county-level regulations. If you live in one of those cities, check the city-specific page instead.

Full Breakdown

Article 14 of the Jefferson County Zoning Resolution (adopted August 27, 1992, amended through October 9, 2025) sets the countywide sign standards enforced by the Department of Development Services. 01(g) limits needs no separate permit or fee from the Department of Development Services. S. 09(c), the Exempt Signs list for that corridor, names 'Political campaign signs on private property' as item 11, exempting them from the Highway Corridor's site-plan and sign-permit process outright, provided they create no safety hazard as determined by the governing authority. 01(g).

Violations & Fines

A political sign that exceeds two per parcel, four square feet, or the six-month posting window under §1403.01(g) is no longer exempt and must meet the Resolution's permanent-sign standards and permitting process under §1401. Violating any provision of the Zoning Resolution is a class B misdemeanor under §1901, with each day of continued violation a separate offense; the Building Commissioner must first issue a written citation directing the owner to cease and desist before any criminal prosecution follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many political signs can I put on my property in Jefferson County?
Up to two per parcel under Section 1403.01(g) of the Zoning Resolution, and each sign is capped at four square feet and must be non-illuminated. These limits apply in any zoning district where county regulations govern, covering unincorporated Jefferson County outside cities like Birmingham and Hoover.
How long can a political sign stay up?
Section 1403.01(g) allows political signs to be posted for 'not more than six (6) months,' after which the sign must meet the Resolution's standards for permanent signs, meaning it needs the permit, fee and inspection process set out in Section 1401 to remain lawfully in place.
Are political signs treated differently in the Highway 280 Corridor?
Yes. Section 1502.09(c)(11), the Exempt Signs list for the U.S. Highway 280 Overlay District, names 'Political campaign signs on private property' as its own exempt category, removing them from that corridor's separate site-plan and sign-permit process as long as they create no safety hazard.
What happens if I violate the sign limits?
Any sign exceeding the count, size or six-month window loses its exemption and needs a standard sign permit under Section 1401. Violating the Zoning Resolution is a class B misdemeanor under Section 1901, with each additional day of violation charged as a separate offense after the Building Commissioner's written citation.
