Bonneville County, ID Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Chapter 152 requires a county sign permit before installing most signs in the unincorporated area, but § 152.32 lists categories the Planning and Zoning Department does not require to go through that process. Subsection (I) covers "window signs in a window display of merchandise when incorporated in that display," meaning a sign placed inside a storefront window alongside the merchandise it advertises is exempt outright rather than subject to the size, height and zone-based tables that apply to pole signs, wall signs and billboards under §§ 152.20 through 152.31.

The same exemption list covers other common temporary signage a business or homeowner might otherwise assume needs a permit: directional or informational signs of three square feet or less, memorial plaques, government-required traffic and utility signs, community-event banners removable within seven days, construction-identification signs removable within 14 days, real estate signs up to 32 square feet, homeowner locator signs of one square foot, candidate signs up to 32 square feet removable within 14 days of the election, and holiday, religious, welcome-home and no-trespassing signs. Because window signage sits inside private glass rather than on public right-of-way or a freestanding structure, the county treats it, like these other listed categories, as posing little enough visual or safety impact to skip the permit and inspection steps that apply to exterior sign structures under §§ 152.27 through 152.29.
