Mount Pleasant, SC Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 156.826(H), part of Chapter 156's Subchapter G, Part 2 (Sign Standards), defines a window sign as a permanent sign posted, painted, placed, or affixed to the inside or outside of a window or glass door. Division (2) folds window signage into the same calculation as other attached signage: window signs and any interior store signs visible from outside the building count as part of the attached sign area calculation that governs wall, projecting, and awning signs elsewhere in § 156.826. Division (3) creates one exception: a single row of copy, not exceeding six inches in height, placed along the top or bottom of each ground-level display window, is excluded from that calculation, mirroring a similar six-inch valence exemption the code gives awning signs under § 156.826(F)(4)(b).

Because window signage is not given its own separate square-footage cap, a storefront's total signage, including window displays, is bounded by whatever attached sign area Table 156.825-1 and related sections allow for that use and district. The rule was adopted in the town's 1-14-2025 zoning rewrite and is administered by the Planning, Land Use and Neighborhoods Department.
