Ames, IA Soliciting & Door-to-Door: No-Knock Registry (2026)

Section 17.26(10) sets a citywide curfew on residence-to-residence peddling and solicitation of orders or of gifts and donations: no person may engage in that activity between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Separately, Sec. 17.26(15) creates a no-knock protection for households: it is a violation for any person, whether registered with the City or not, to enter a residential premises while soliciting, peddling, or selling if the owner, occupant, or person in charge has posted a sign reading No Peddlers, No Solicitors, or words of similar import at the entry to the premises or the entry to the principal building.

The rule applies regardless of registration status, so even a solicitor holding a valid City Clerk badge under Sec. 17.26(1) must honor a posted sign. Both the curfew and the sign rule sit within the same peddler and solicitor ordinance that requires registration, a City-set fee, and a photo identification badge, and both protect residents from unwanted after-hours or unwanted-at-all doorstep contact. The Ames Police Department enforces the ordinance and can order a violator to cease; the rule reaches any residential premises in the city, not just single addresses that have separately registered a complaint.
