Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to sell door-to-door in unincorporated Monterey County?
Yes. Section 7.20.020 makes it unlawful for any itinerant vendor, defined to include anyone going door to door or setting up a temporary stand, to do business in the unincorporated area without a license procured from the Sheriff. The Sheriff investigates the applicant's business and moral character before issuing it.
What must I submit with a Monterey County peddler license application?
Section 7.20.030 requires a sworn application with your name, physical description, permanent and temporary address, description of goods sold, two duplicate photographs taken in the prior 60 days, fingerprints taken by the Sheriff, and your complete arrest history. If you sell food from a vehicle, a state health permit is also required.
Can I refuse door-to-door solicitors at my home?
Yes.
