Albemarle County, VA Special Events & Permits: Parade Permits (2026)

Section 9-111 of the Albemarle County Code requires a permit before any athletic contest, race, demonstration, planned gathering, or parade may occupy or proceed along a county highway. The permit must be presented to the Chief of Police, and the event must also comply with any other applicable regulations elsewhere in Chapter 9, Motor Vehicles and Traffic. The section carves out four exemptions that need no permit: the military forces of the United States, the military forces of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Albemarle County Police Department, and the county's Department of Fire and Rescue.

The provision dates to the county's 1967 code and was carried forward through the 1988 recodification and the 2021 renumbering of Chapter 9 (Ord. 21-9(1)), with its substantive text unchanged since a 1988 amendment. 00.
