Alabama Dog Confinement and Rabies Control Laws

Alabama Code Section 3-7A-2 requires every dog, cat, and ferret three months or older to be vaccinated against rabies. Section 3-1-5 makes it unlawful for any owner to allow a dog to run at large upon premises of another, with civil and criminal liability. Section 3-1-3 imposes strict liability for dog bites occurring at the owner's premises when the dog was not on the owner's property. While statewide leash specifications are not mandated, the running-at-large prohibition functions as a baseline restraint requirement enforced uniformly across Alabama.
