Alaska Vehicle Firearm Carry Allowed Without Permit

Under AS 11.61.220, an adult 21 or older who is legally allowed to possess a firearm may carry a concealed handgun anywhere not specifically prohibited, including inside a motor vehicle. Long guns may also be transported loaded or unloaded in vehicles, as Alaska imposes no general case or unloading requirement on private vehicle transport. Drivers contacted by peace officers must affirmatively disclose the presence of any concealed deadly weapon and comply with officer directions about it. Firearms preemption under AS 29.35.145 prevents municipalities and boroughs from creating separate vehicle-carry restrictions, locked-container rules, or transport licenses. Carry in vehicles within school zones, court grounds, and licensed alcohol premises remains restricted by state law.

Failure to disclose a concealed firearm to a peace officer is a class B misdemeanor under AS 11.61.220, and unlawful possession in restricted zones may be charged as a misdemeanor or felony.
