Connecticut Has No Statewide Polystyrene Foam Ban

Unlike neighboring states such as New York and Maine, Connecticut has not passed a comprehensive prohibition on expanded polystyrene foam food service containers. Restaurants, caterers, and food retailers may legally use foam takeout containers, cups, and trays under state law. The General Assembly has considered foam ban legislation but no statewide measure has been adopted. Several Connecticut municipalities have enacted local foam restrictions, particularly for school cafeterias and municipal facilities, exercising home rule authority over local operations.

No state polystyrene violations exist; municipalities with local foam ordinances enforce penalties through their own codes.
