Indiana Pool Barrier Code Through Building Standards

The Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission adopts uniform building codes including pool standards through Title 675 of the Indiana Administrative Code. Residential pools deeper than 24 inches require barriers at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Above-ground pool walls may serve as barriers when meeting height requirements. Pool covers conforming to ASTM F1346 may substitute in some cases. Local building departments enforce these statewide minimums and may impose stricter standards but cannot waive code requirements for permitted residential pools.

Building code violations may result in stop-work orders, permit revocation, and civil fines through local enforcement. Liability exposure significant in drowning incidents involving non-compliant barriers.
