Kentucky Open Carry Rules and Local Limits

Kentucky has long permitted the open carrying of firearms by adults legally allowed to possess them, with no permit required. KRS 65.870 preempts local regulation of firearms, including most attempts to restrict open carry on public property. KRS 237.115 allows local governments and the state university system to restrict concealed carry in publicly owned buildings, but open carry remains broadly protected. Federal and state restrictions still apply to schools, courthouses, detention facilities, and other locations specified by statute.

Carrying in prohibited locations such as schools, federal buildings, or court facilities can result in misdemeanor or felony charges under KRS 527 and federal law.
