Maine Open Carry Rules Under State Firearms Law

Maine has no statute prohibiting open carry of handguns or long guns by persons legally permitted to possess firearms. Title 25 MRS section 2011 preempts municipal carry regulations beyond discharge and posted municipal buildings. Carriers must still comply with location-based prohibitions, including schools, courthouses, and posted private property. Brandishing or threatening conduct may trigger criminal liability under Title 17-A. Federal Gun-Free School Zones Act compliance is required near school grounds.

Unlawful possession or carry in prohibited zones is a Class D or E crime; criminal threatening with a firearm may be charged as a Class C felony.
