Massachusetts Vehicle Firearm Carry Rules Under Chapter 140

Under MGL Chapter 140 Section 131, a License to Carry (LTC) holder may transport a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle while it remains under their direct control or properly secured. Without an LTC, any handgun transported in a vehicle must be unloaded and stored in a locked case, locked trunk, or other secure container, with ammunition separately stored. Long guns transported by FID holders or other lawful possessors must be unloaded during transport under MGL Chapter 269 Section 12D. Vehicle carry triggers the same licensing rules as carry on the person, and unlicensed loaded transport is treated as carrying a firearm under Chapter 269 Section 10.

Unlicensed loaded firearm transport in a vehicle is a felony under MGL Chapter 269 Section 10, carrying a mandatory minimum 18 months incarceration in many cases plus possible larger penalties.
