Montana Exotic Wildlife Possession Permits Required Statewide

MCA 87-4-801 through 87-4-816 require a roadside menagerie or wild animal menagerie permit issued by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) for possession of bears, large cats, wolves, and most non-domestic species. MCA 87-5-701 et seq. classifies controlled, noncontrolled, and prohibited exotic species. Prohibited species include certain primates and dangerous wildlife. Permits require facility inspections, escape prevention, and liability insurance. While cities may add restrictions, the state baseline applies universally and preempts ownership of prohibited species regardless of local rules.

Possessing prohibited or unpermitted exotic wildlife is a misdemeanor with fines up to $1,000, animal seizure, and possible permit revocation under MCA 87-6-401.
