Nebraska Abandoned Vehicle Removal Statute

Under Neb. Rev. Stat. sections 60-1901 through 60-1911, a vehicle is considered abandoned if left unattended on a public road for more than six hours, or on other public property for more than twenty-four hours, or on private property without consent. Law enforcement or authorized agents may impound the vehicle and store it at a licensed facility. The garage keeper must notify the registered owner and lienholders within ten days using Department of Motor Vehicles records. Unclaimed vehicles may be sold at public auction after thirty days. Local ordinances may add procedural detail but cannot shorten statutory notice or alter disposal procedures.

Owners remain liable for towing, storage, and auction costs. Failure to reclaim within thirty days results in forfeiture and sale, with proceeds applied to unpaid charges.
