Nevada Exotic Pet and Wildlife Possession Rules

NRS 503.582 and NAC 503.110 establish Nevada's exotic animal framework. The Commission on Wildlife maintains lists of prohibited species (cannot be possessed) and restricted species (require permits). Prohibited animals include alligators, crocodiles, wolves, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, and most non-human primates. Restricted species require importation and possession permits issued by NDOW. Common pets like dogs, cats, ferrets, and most reptiles are unregulated by the state. While localities may impose stricter rules, they cannot legalize state-prohibited animals. Las Vegas and Clark County add additional bans on lions, tigers, bears, and elephants regardless of state status.

Unlawful possession of prohibited or unpermitted exotic wildlife is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months jail and $1,000 fine, plus seizure of the animal.
