Nevada Floodplain Management And NFIP Compliance Standards

Under NRS 532.200 and 44 CFR Part 60, the Nevada State Engineer coordinates floodplain management statewide. Communities participating in the NFIP must adopt and enforce ordinances that regulate development in mapped Special Flood Hazard Areas, require elevation of new structures above base flood elevation, restrict fill in floodways, and require floodplain development permits. The Nevada Flood Awareness Program supports local mapping and outreach. Cities and counties may adopt stricter standards but cannot fall below FEMA minimums without losing NFIP eligibility for residents. Substantial improvements to existing buildings exceeding 50 percent of value trigger full compliance with current standards.

Building in a regulated floodway without a permit may trigger removal orders, daily fines under local code, suspension from the NFIP, and denial of federal disaster assistance.
